What are the laws concerning online gambling in the UK and Canada? I've heard the UK doesn't even tax gambling income. Is this true? What about Canada?

I know that casino's are legal in canada and people play poker there. Also Canada is technically a part of the United Kingdom and recognize the queen as their leader, so I would assume they follow the same laws as the UK

All legal gambling in canada is licensed by there respected provinces.
So playing onlne you would be guilty of gambling at an unlicensed establishment.
However our govt probably figures wtf can you do?,throw poker players in jail for 5 years.Than what? Throw potheads in jail too!

This is the funniest thing I have read in ages.

Canadians do not pay tax on anything they win, including poker $$$. But good luck playing online without the american fishtank.

Eh, not the most accurate statement. Search for a Canadian tax thread, specifically with a poster named TorontoCFE.

I'm not sure if this guy is serious and is just a moron or he's pulling the proverbial leg.

Perhaps you should revist your logic on this one... I mean just saying might not be right there ya know...

No tax on gambling income here in the UK, even if you do it as your sole source of income. However US citizens need to pay tax on gambling winnings to the IRS wherever you live in the world so for US citizens moving to the UK does not save you any tax (although at least you can play online legally!).

As others have implied, Canada is a seperate nation and does not share any of its laws with the UK. The Queen is the nominal head-of-state (though this role is performed by the Governor General of Canada in her stead) and has no political power.

Gambling winnings are taxable in Canada if you approach it as a business. There are several criteria used to determine this, such as a systematic approach designed to profit from the activity.

No one has been brought to court yet in Canada for failing to pay taxes on poker winnings, but there have been recent cases dealing with professional sportsbettors.

There is no law against playing online poker in Canada, nor are there any special restrictions on moving money around (that I am aware of). Of the major sites, only Bodog does not allow Canadian customers.

My understanding of it is that in Canada, you only need to pay taxes if it is your sole source of income. But I've heard differing view points, and even my buddy who does taxes for a living can't give me a 100% answer.

If you did that, you'd decimate the population.

I seem to have been running into many different opinions on this as well. I talked to a top notch tax attorney on the phone who told me it is not taxable ... I didn't however ask him if it was taxable for people doing it for a living and have had different answers from all sorts of different people.

The bookies/sites pay a percentage of their revenue instead. Also sponsorship deals, books, writing on gambling etc is taxable income so Vicoria Coren pays nothing on her £500,000 EPT win this week but she does pay tax for tellng us about it in her Observer column (I think to wind up an anti gambling columnist).

Simialrly the DevilFish will pay tax on income from public speaking, interviews, appearences etc but not any gambling winnings.

So, if you move to Canada or the UK, you'd still have to pay taxes the US gov't? [censored]. What if you gain dual citizenship or simply revoke your US citizenship? I want to play tax free! A true leach on society!

The Observer column is a gossip/news thing the Poker column (which is very good by the way) is in the Guardian. The hendonmob site links to them from this page

In Canada if it is your only source of income, it is taxable.

Comes down to expectation of profit.
