Obviously, the poker sites have some kind of lobbying effort to save their business. So what forces were pushing the bill. Was it just an attempt to get election year contributions? Were the casino interests pushing it? Did the banks want this? What other special interests would benefit from it? Was it because they don't get tax revenue from offshore based sites?

You're a day late and a dollar short. This forum has been full of that stuff for months. Not trying to be a dick, but just start reading past threads.

I'm wondering the same question. Something like this doesn't happen without someone being paid off a lot of money by somebody. I don't believe that the Religious Right's money or support was at stake with this bill. It would probably be worth going through Frist's (and his PACs) contributors, but I haven't had a chance to do that yet.

My opinion is that it was driven by a desire for Republican politicians to court favor with the Christian right. I think most share that opinion.

For the most part though, the Republicans just pay lip service to the Christians, they never actually accomplish much of their agenda. Nothing gets done in Congress without a lot of money from someone to pay for it, I doubt it's any different here.

Remember, just as us anti-imperialist, anti-free trade, anti-Iraq and anti-big government people have nowhere to look to except the Democratic party, which has been and will be a center-right party, the Christians have nowhere to go except the Republicans.

I am not quite satisfied with this explanation. There are a lot of things that the Christian right cares about more than gambling.

I guess it could be true, but it seems like a lot of effort to get half-of-an-attaboy from the right.
