i'm doing a research paper on college poker players. i'm trying to gather data from actual players, and from ppl outside the community like here on 2+2.

here are my questions if you'd like to help...(please!)
-who do you think plays more: frat boys or geeky students?
-what kind of young women play? are there specific characteristics to their personality?
-what kind of bankroll do you believe college students have to start playing online?

appreciate the help. thanks.

I've been out of college a long time but deal with the kids here everyday and will try to answer.

[/ QUOTE ]

Frat boys will predominate in live games on campus and off because popular kids only like to associate with same and also don't want geeks taking their money when they play drunk and stupid. For that reason, geeks will predominate online.

Traits of young women who play:

-desire to associate with those who have $$ and possibly smarts to have a good gene and finanacial pool from which to choose a hubby
-desire to show men that they can be equal or superior to them in mental pursuits and games

I am a college student, I think geeky kids play more online, B&M might be close to a split.

I don't know any college women that play so I don't really have any idea.

I deposited 50 dollars. I would say 50-300 maybe more if they are a rich kid or big time gambler. A few of my roomates just put money online for the first time and they each put in $200. However they have no concept of bankroll management so that will probably dissapear pretty quickly.

1. I have no friends at school because I'm a loser and never go outside, so I'll pick geeky students. If I played in home games I'm sure it'd be frat boys, that's what I saw the most of the few times I played at the casino near my school last year.

2. Usually when I see girls playing it's because their boyfriends dragged them out to the casino to play a crapshoot tournament, they're often fairly hot. In cash games I've seen 1 hot college ageish chick, 1 normal one, the rest of the women I have played with are old beasts.

3. A bad one. I started with 50, reloaded like 50, then put on like 100 or something and that was it. If I had started out playing limit poker online instead of NL I probably would have had to put less, but I'm obsessive and refuse to do anything without doing it right, so I'm sure I'm the exception. I really doubt that I would have dumped more than like 300 or so trying to learn before I quit. Another person I used to know has put what I estimate to be 6k-8k (fairly conservative, 10-12k is possible) online and pissed it all away because he refused to learn and has to play in bigger games where people respect his raises and then stack him anyway.

At my school, which happens to be a tech school, I'd say its equal. The frat boys have their own game, as do the geeks. I've played in both, and I can say most people in general are just awful at poker. However, the kids at my school generally are smart enough to realize that if they aren't winning by playing online, they shouldn't play there. So, I suppose its mostly kids who dedicate themselves to learning to play better than average are the ones who play online at my school.

As for females, I agree with the other post about the boyfriend who dragged them into playing, as well as girls who feel they can do anything men can do just for the sake of doing it. Though, its pretty rare in my experience in any case.

Regarding bankroll, a lot of kids definitely put in like $50 or $100, just enough to play low limits and try it out. They usually piss it away. I personally waited a long time to deposit real money. I played an obscene amount of free games online, and my home game with my H.S. friends is on the average exceptionally strong (which includes some popular forum members here) and that's where I gained a lot of my skills. By the time I first deposited, it was $500 to get the typical $100 PP bonus... and I never lost it. I suppose thats the exception to the rule. For my friends at college who are marginal players at best and thinking about playing online, I suggest they deposit $500 initially and maintain the 300bb rule, and/or play low buyin SNGs until they get better.

-who do you think plays more: frat boys or geeky students?

Fratboys, without question.

-what kind of young women play? are there specific characteristics to their personality?

Women that play need to be competitive and be able to hold their own in a male-dominated game (e.g. tomboys).

-what kind of bankroll do you believe college students have to start playing online?

$50-$200.

I don't really see the point in asking us who we "think" plays more, or what type of women play. No one here knows and will all give bad responses unless they have actually done the research to find out which is very doubtful.

Well.. at least theres a bit of a trend forming from these (albeit limited amount of posts) which should help with the research. Slightly more frat boys, competitive women, and pretty low college student bankroll appear to be prevailing themes.

You act like the two are mutually exclusive.

As Nottom has indicated, none of these answers are "scientifically accurate" per se, but I'll throw in my contribution.

1. I would say it's equal. Geeks probably play more online, though, since your average "frat guy" wouldn't want to get wasted and play poker alone in front of a computer.

2. I've only known two girls that played poker. One was a competitive tomboy type, and the other was a psychology major, and very intelligent. The psyc major was way better.

3. My friend started his bankroll by winning a freeroll, and building it up from there, but he hasn't had much success. I started my bankroll by making a minimum deposit for the bonus, and then withdrawing my deposit. So I started with $13, none of which was actually mine. A few other friends of mine are considering starting to play online, and they're planning on making a minimum deposit for $50.

I think it depends on how you define "more".

My initial answer would have been "frat boys" (I take "frat boys" to include both brothers and those individuals that exhibit these characteristics), without a doubt. My impression would be that the group size of frat boys that play poker is greater than that of the geeks, but the group of geeks play a larger number of hands than the group of frat boys.

You could put out a survey with some key questions:
- How often do you play (how many times a week on average)?
- What games do you play (tourney vs ring, NL vs limit, size of buy-in)?
- How much do you play (how many hours a week on average)?
- <insert some question that might determine how many hands the respondant plays>

1) I am a frat boy that goes to an Ivy League institution, so I guess you can say I fit both categories.

2) When I play with women, typically they are home games and they are action-oriented, lacking discipline. The alcohol they hold in their hands doesnt help that much either.

3) Anywhere from $50-$10,000+, though I suspect that the vast majority of college poker players are playing from impromptu bankrolls, scrouging around $50 - $150 here and there.

I've seen college kids playing on the $5-$60 spread and the $30-$60 hold'em games at our local casino. I'd like to know where THEY get THEIR money. :-)

There are quite a few 18-22 year olds on this site that play high stakes.

Here is my opinion, as someone who paid his way through college by playing the "Frat Games" and online.

(1) I've seen some of the geeky guys play, but they're usually smart, sound fundamentally, and timid. The frat boys are usually drunk and overagressive.

(2) As for women. Women are dangerous, in general. There weren't many women players at my school, but in general, they were better players than the men. Usually they are very smart, decently popular, and in general, they excel in areas of study that rely on critical thinking.
(3) BR wise, I started with $100, but that varies widely dependant on the school, and the group of students the student plays with. I have friends at UGA who run a $25/50 NLHE game 3 days a week, average pot:~$550-$600, but I have alot of friends at UGA who also play $0.50/$1.00 at both live and online.

The women I know who play don't share any characteristics other than being female. Poker is getting more and more poular, so more and more people are playing. There's quite a variety of people playing now and I don't think there are many similarities.

The OP's questions are being missed here. It is clear that he/she wants biased responses to see what poker players think, and not the actual truth.

no frats here, cant answer that
the one girl we play with has a brother who plays medium-high stakes and has a loud personality, likes to impress people
of my friends, we dont have bankrolls...usually we will deposit 50-200 and build it up with 10s and $50 cgs, two of us have made it to nearly 10k in the past year.

$50-$300

100% not geeks, geeks are too worried they will lose $, but I hate most frat guys anyway. Who wants to belong to a fraternity and pay those costs and crap??? Probably only geeks who want to be cool. I dunno, I know only one frat guy here @ my school really well. I tried to get some of my friends started the way I did, with the $10 free dollars or freeroll $ and some of them have built it up. I know one kid who built his entire roll from those 10 cent giveaways Victor Chandler used to have. I think a lot of kids are afraid to deposit any actual $ and try to start with nothing, like I did.

-who do you think plays more: frat boys or geeky students?
Frat guys as a whole play more, few geeks play, but once the geeks get going, they don't stop (frankly they don't have anything esle to do). Most of the players are inexperienced. The frat guys are more difficult to play against, since you need to catch some cards against them. The geeks love to call, so its easier to play against them. Few geeks play online poker, but those that do are very good. Some frat guys play online poker, they generally fail.

-what kind of young women play? are there specific characteristics to their personality?
I've only played with girlfriends of the guys in the game, and a girls who like to hang around men. They gave off strong tells, and generally were huge calling station. Those girls didn't even raise with the nuts.

-what kind of bankroll do you believe college students have to start playing online?
Most start with the absolute minimum, and re-deposit till forever

I am a college student myself. I wouldn't say I am either geeky or a frat boy, but I play a lot of poker. I mostly play live poker and very little online. This is of course not the norm.

-who do you think plays more: frat boys or geeky students?
I would say about 50/50. The frat boys have the money to gamble but the geeky students are the ones to be afraid of because they may actually know what they are doing. I have been very surprised by the skill level of some of the students at my school. The frat boys play more live and the geeks more online.

-what kind of young women play? are there specific characteristics to their personality?
The good ones are usually tomboys who want to show that they can beat the boys and the bad ones are usually someones girlfriend.

-what kind of bankroll do you believe college students have to start playing online?
There seem to be a lot of rich kids who lose a lot of money online. Of course they all most likely start with a minimum buy in.

You might want to do a survey of college students on here instead of just getting opinions.

- fraternity members (don't forget dorms)
- extroverted women
- smaller bankroll because there are so many other things one should be doing while in college than playing cards. I say no bankroll, even; if they have disposable money, play a little poker within their means, but also do other activities.
