I know some Windows programs can be run on Linux, but I want to find out specifically about the ones I use most, i.e. poker and casino sites, pokertracker, pokerace, etc. How would I go about finding the answers before switching to Linux and going by trial and error?

Forget it. None of it will run reliably.

If you want to have linux, set up a dual boot configuration and run your windows programs under windows.

VMWare lets you run any Windows software...
On any Linux machine or Mac...
By allocating 4 GB of space...
Setting up a complete "virtual computer"...
Onto which you load a full Windows installation.

It's a mature product and bulletproof.

I ran the 30 free trial without incident...
Primarily to test isolating the Party Client/Spyware...
From the rest of my network.

check out Wine (http://www.winehq.com/) . Haven't used it, but I read good things about it on slashdot.

Tried getting party and ub running under Wine one day when i was bored. no luck. Maybe i'm missing some super-secret config file switch, but I couldn't do it.

PokerStars and PokerTracker worked for me under Wine about 4-5 months ago, and I used it for about a month. Never tried Party skins but I heard they didn't work.

Your best bet is to just run an emulation program like VMware like one of the other posters said. Pretty much everything will work with these.

This is a Windows simulation environment...
And as such will be very hit and miss...
And unsuitable for serious applications.

Sophisticated software like Party Client and Poker Academy...
Use custom controls and techniques...
And do not rely on standard Windows API calls.

In contrast...
VMWare is a "virtual computer"...
On which you actually install a full version of Windows...
Any version you got 2000, XP, etc.

100% of Windows applications will run.

And there is no simple way for the Spyware to know...
(Other than low level disk scanning)...
Whether it's running on an actual Windows PC...
Or an identical "virtual Windows PC" created by VMWare.

Bump to the top -- even though it's an ancient thread, I wondered the same thing about getting poker clients running under Wine. (FWIW I'm using Pacific and Absolute more than Party, but I wondered if any of them run.)

Consensus here seems to be that sometimes they run, if you're lucky, but not reliably. Has anything changed, or can anyone else throw in an opinion, to indicate that I could expect this to work?

(In discussing this issue in a tech-savvy IRC channel, I was told that "simple apps" like poker clients should run fine under Wine. I bought a used laptop with Win ME -- uggh! -- and would very much like to wipe it and put on *nix, probably Fedora. But not having poker clients run on it would pretty much be a deal breaker, at least until I get my primary laptop working again.)

Also, since VMWare is mentioned above, how much disk space would it take up on Linux? Quite a bit, no?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

I haven't tried it, but my research led me to the same conclusion. I've been using Linux for about 12 years (MCC distribution; around kernel version 0.9) and stopped using Windows completely around 1998. But like you, I bought a Windows laptop just for playing poker.

If you come up with anything, let us know.
