View Full Version : Is next year's HORSE tournament going to be all HORSE

On the PPV of the FT, Doyle Brunson complained about the switch to NLHE. He said he was 2nd going into the final table and probably would have finished better if it stayed HORSE. He said that although NLHE was supposed to be his game, there was more variance than with limit poker. He said next year they are playing the final table as HORSE. Is this true?

I hope so - how can you have a HORSE tourney then change it to NLHE at the final table? It makes no sense. Do you play a football season then play baseball at the superbowl?

Anyway, HORSE is now becoming more popular at the online sites, so I would think that next year the HORSE event will be even more popular than this year. I don't think they will be able to demand a change at the final table like they did this year with the increasing popularity of HORSE.

I fail to understand why the harahs group cant leave the game be as intended. The NL wannabes must be educated as the game was structured.
There is hope now that players will get beyond tunnel vision with the introduction of HORSE as the latest fad.

That was just retarded.

Surely if they were going to change it (and they shouldn't), it should be changed to Limit and not NL.

Whoever came up with this idea should explain themselves and then be pointed at and called a retard.

I get the feeling that Harrahs should not be running the WSOP. They made the 'real' main event a virtual non-event by changing to NLHE for the final table. Why do ESPN need another NLHE final table anyway? There are eleventy gazillion to choose from anyway this year.

Weren't the mixed game tournaments at the tournament of champions played NL Hold'em on the final table?

its quite standard to revert to NLH for the final table, limit tournaments have to turn into a massive crapshoot to be resolved

Despite what Doyle says, one would think that ESPN would have the greatest influence on Harrah's, and they have a vested interest in the final table being NLHE, for TV purposes.

It's so unbecoming of Doyle to complain about his finish in the event as it pertains to the change to NL.

Poker players love to complain. The boutique pros wanted a high buyin mixed game event so that they could showcase their well-rounded awesomeness. I don't see how making the final table No limit impedes this.

A real Mixed Game Tournament of Awesomeness should involve: PLO, NLHE, PLHE, QORSE, 2-7, A-5, badoogi and m'fin Chinese Poker, anyway.

m'fin Chinese Poker, anyway.

I was playing at a local casino and the dealer had a gold bracelet on. I asked him what event and he was like 1996 Chinese Poker Champion. I verified it online afterwards, but I thought it was cool. 2nd bracelet winner I've run into.

ESPN is just televising the final table I beleive, and that sucks because we don't get to see them play HORSE.

I'd like to challenge the notion that watching 9 of the best players in the world (those who made the 50K FT) play stud and split-pot games is more rewarding than watching them play NL.

I believe that would be Jeffery Pollock(think thats his name) and the so called wsop committee(made up of certain pros)

switching to NL makes perfect sense. It makes the game go faster, short stacked limit sucks.

Before NL became popular a lot of the limit MTTs would turn to NL at the end. Trying to play RAZZ with 7BBs is retarded.

I was at the Rio on Day 1 of this tourney sweating a table with Juanda, Ivey, Violette, Raymer, Elezra, and a couple unknowns. Standing right behind Ivey, I could sometimes see his hole cards over his shoulder. The play of the hands was exciting (I'm a limit player), even when I couldn't see Ivey's cards. It was also interesting to watch Elezra & Ivey keep track of their prop betting on the up cards.

I'm not usually much of a fanboy, but this was pretty awesome to watch live. It really is a shame that TV viewers won't have any of that experience.

No, you don't but it would be a good test of someone's overall athleticism.

Are you the guy that offered to pay him a couple thousand for the bracelet?

(I know who you're talking about, obviously.)

Not, it really isn't a shame. I too would love to see how Phil Ivey plays a rough 8 draw in razz, but for most people tuning in to ESPN, trying to read the board in Omaha would be an undesireable excercise. For those who crave the experience you describe, they can go down to the Rio just like you did.

Anyway, with all the war in the world you should be happy just to be alive.

This has been discussed before, but they can't televise a HORSE final table the way they do NLHE. They could maybe do it on PPV, either live or later with hole cards.

The problem is not limit or the split pots. The problem is it would be incredibly confusing to show one hand holdem, the next omaha, the next razz, then the next hand stud, then a hand of stud/8, a hand of holdem, etc.

They could maybe show the whole 10 hour final table on ESPN or just show it from when it gets 3-way or something. However, they won't do that for the same reason they didn't show the clock as 8 AM last ME FT. They don't want people to realize they are just seeing a highlight reel.

Yeah, I just meant that it's a shame that there IS a great experience to be had watching HORSE, but that there's no good way to bring that experience to the TV viewer under their current model (of only showing select hands). I'd love to see it done live like the FT PPV this year; that was really amazing.

The FT won't be HORSE, because HORSE won't televise well. Plain and simple.

i dont necessarily see what is wrong wtih switching to NL holdem. its the best shallow stack poker game. plus if its an all around game of poker skill why not include NL hold 'em.

no words more than these are needed to explain why horse wont be televised.
and guys, this tourny is supposed to be won by an excellent ALL-AROUND player. why shouldnt NL be included in that? a true all-around poker champion should be able to excel in limit games AND NL.
