View Full Version : 3-Handed BJ, Variance Greater?

Hello all,

I have a quick question. Is the variance per hand higher when playing 3-hands at $5 > 1-hand at $5 or is it the same per hand? (not per round)

Thanks ahead of time.

Per-hand, no... unless you are using a composition dependent strategy (which is probably a waste of your time). Think about it like this: variance is the same for you whether you are playing by yourself or with others.

I'd think it's higher if you're the one playing all three hands. Probably not by a whole lot though.

There is a huge difference there was a thread in this forum calculating it within the last week or so.

The thread was about per-round variance, whereas the OP was asking about per-hand variance.

Variance is something that is calculated over a number of hands... not one hand. Not sure what OP is asking.

Interesting how people like to get so exact with EV calculations and variance formulas for bonus fueled blackjack.

Basicly the more you bet on these bonuses over time the more you will make.

JUST PLAY THE GAME!

I interpreted it as follows:
Say you are playing hands in spots A, B, and C, each for $5 over an infinite period of time. stdev(A) = stdev(B) = stdev(C).

Playing 100 rounds of 3x$5 variance is much greater than playing 300 rounds of $5/hand. The reason is that your results on all 3 hands depend on the same dealer hand. If the dealer gets BJ, all 3 (non BJ hands) lose, just as if you played a single $15 hand. If the dealer busts, any non-busted hands will win. You don't get the full smoothing effect of playing 300 independent hands at $5, but perhaps more like 200 hands of $7.50. (Hand waving only-- no math in that number.)

This is the gereral feeling I was getting because I was getting sick of the software speed on my last casino and decided to play 3 handed $5 vs. one-handed $5. The swings were getting ugly (especially on dealer BlackJacks) and this is why I asked.

Thank you all for the discussion, and thanks to sonneti for the link. I checked with WoO and even though I couldn't find raw numbers, I was informed that for a given number of hands, my variance will be greater playing 3 handed vs. 1 handed.

change your bets to 3 handed $2 or $3. you'll be betting more each time but i bet the variance is comparable to $5 one hand.

I seen a few posts that suggest multi hand is possibly slower that single hand. Not sure myself.

Depends on the software. Crypto's are probably slower, while Playtech is probably not. Cherry Casino (and equivalent) are fast anyway, so I don't think it matters.
