Since I have no life and am fed up with Party, along with the fact I'm in a WSOP fantasy contest with a friend, I've calculated POY points for many players. This uses last year's system (which I am unsure if it got scrapped this year by ESPN or not):

http://www.pokernews.com/news/2005/06/espn-player-year-race.htm

2006 POY Standings

1. Jeff Madsen - 601
2. Phil Hellmuth - 466
3. Bill Chen - 415
4. Carlos Mortensen - 359
5. Tom Franklin - 346
6. John Cernuto - 330
7. Allen Cunningham - 308
8. David Williams - 286
9. Max Pescatori - 265
10. Nam Le - 265

Other notables:

Eric Froehlich - 258
John Phan - 243
Erick Lindgren - 229
Phil Ivey - 223
John Juanda - 210
Cyndy Violette - 208

Notable disappointments:

Josh Arieh - Donut
Scotty Nguyen - Donut
Howard Lederer - 23
Layne Flack - 24
Darrell Dicken - 28
Michael Mizrachi - 46
Chris Ferguson - 72

If you have absolutely any corrections or add-ons, feel free to let me know so this can be as accurate as possible.

Nice work, saves me the trouble of bothering to compare the CP POY and the ESPN POY standings. At Pokerwire, they have the ESPN POY standings for 2006, which seems to be based on money won in all events, except for HORSE.

If phil wins We will never hear the end of it from Phil.

So Go Phil Go. Does the Pescatori dude still wear that dish cloth on his head. Plays a ton of tourneys.

Which, if is the actual new system, absolutely sucks.

im pretty sure they change the formula every year so a name player or a great story will win it. This year, it will be one of those top three.

Does this include the Circuit events? Because the ESPN PoY race last year counted them. I would have to think Negreanu and Ferguson would be much higher on the list if it did.

What I calculated doesnt include Circuit events.

2005's standings did, but 2004 did not (not suprising since there were no circuit events).

By the way, pretty big one I missed for notables:

Joe Hachem - 264

From the above site:

RANK PLAYER LOCATION POINTS FINAL TABLES WINNINGS
87 David 'Chip' Reese Las Vegas, NV, US 672 1 $1,784,640

No argument with the order at the top of the list, but I think Chip Reese's rank of 87 despite winning the biggest buy-in/toughest-per-capita/most-prestigious-event-not-labeled "The Main Event" invites some scrutiny into how these numbers are derived. Large buy-in/small field events with lots of initial play cannot be easily compared to small buy-in/large field events with little initial play. Skill should be > luck.

Just an observation...

Captain Tom Franklin, one of the old school poker pros.

I'm sure that the reason he doesn't have the lead, or close to even the top ten, is the same reason the main event winner doesn't just win the poy title.

They don't want someone who just wins one of the big tourneys to also win poy.
