Just a question. Is it safe to walk to and from Palms to Rio at night with large sums of money?

If you have large sums of money, take a small sum and pay for the cab. It's 100 degrees at night in Vegas. And those hotels aren't that close.

i did that cab ride twice and the both drivers were pissed at me. they both said why cant you walk? its actually not a bad walk if you go out the parking garage at Rio and cut through the Gold Coast. On the other hand it still will take you at least 15 mins. dont know why the drivers were mad.

ive carried alot of cash on before. just act normal no one will notice (unless you dress like your rich or something)

My experience with LV cab drivers is that they are constantly mad.

Probably the cab drivers were mad because they had been waiting in line at the hotel for a fare, and the short ride is not worth the wait. For that reason, in general you should overtip on short cab rides where the driver was in a queue at the pickup point. For example, on a $5.25 fare I'd generally give $8 total.

Of course, if the driver does something rude like ask why you didn't walk, he shouldn't get a tip at all.

it's basically on the other side of Flamingo. it's maybe a quarter mile walk...maybe. that said, it is hot - and something could happen anywhere.

palms is not far from rio...that's my main point i guess.

its alot further than it looks.
plus its hard to get to flamingo. i walk fast and it took like 20 mins.

God... Palms is like right across from the Rio... as 2nd poster said... just go out, through the Garage at the Gold Coast... walk through the GC, make some BJ bets on the way, grab a drink, come out the front door and cross the street. There you go. Getting a cab from Rio to Palms is basically like taking one from the Rio to the GC.

If someone attempts to rob you, just start telling them a bad beat story. They'll scram....fast. Make sure it's a really good one like "this one time I had pocket aces and...."

On the other hand, an actual tip that I got from a buddy of mine who lives in Vegas said that he was walking somewhere by the casinos (I'm not familiar with the area) and some guy came up and tried to rob him (he had about 3 grand on him) and my buddy just started freaking out and screaming at him and yelling about how he just lost 10 grand and he didn't have any cash for anyone else let alone himself. He actually scared the guy away for how crazy he was acting.
Just a thought in case something happens.

Like others have said, it's close to the Rio. I don't have knowledge of the general safety of the area, as I've just been driving to and from the Rio every day, but I'm guessing it's not bad, but less safe than the Strip. Generally, I feel safer on the Strip because there are so many people around.

If you want to make the walk, it will be fairly quick and easy. Just use caution like you would walking around in any relatively unknown area. Walk with some friends if you can.

it aint far.
basically you be cuttin' through the gold coast.
then u be walking like a block next to a very busy almost highway type road.
then u cross highway and u be in the luxurious palms.
it aint hard. dress like crap act normal. and no one will know u have a sack of hundreds in your pocket unless they be reading this forum.

If you are legitimately worried then get a cab basically do what you feel comfortable with but from my knowledge it is a fairly safe walk. Get a friend to come with you if that is an option.

Cuz cab drivers in Las Vegas are F'IN DOUCHEBAGS is why. You "screwed" them out of a higher fare than going to the rio.

I had one in Reno get slightly pissed when we asked to go to the Hilton and he asked why we can't take a bus there. WTf, screw you, you p.o.s. It's not your right to tell me where I should and shouldn't go because you'll make more money.

I hate cabbies in Vegas. Tip them 20% and they have this WTF look on their face and my friends and I have been called cheap [censored] and so on by cabbies before. F em all.

I just tell the cabbie I only needed to make a stop at the hotel to pick up a friend, then head to the brothels (a couple hundred bucks including tips). But since he's shown a lousy attitude, I'll find another cab.

One of the reasons I never use cabs any more. If they do not appriciate my money, then they will not get it. I also stopped shopping in several stores/restaurants for the same reason.

I saw a guy get pickpocketed on the strip...a guy ran by us, and then about 5 seconds later a middle aged guy out off breath ran by chasing the guy yelling to stop the guy.

Did that walk many times during WSOP last year, at various times of day/night. Not a problem. Less than 10mins (walking at a good clip) door to door.

Not bad advice .... it is air conditioned inside.

From the Gold Coast, walk along the driveway on the South (Flamingo) side of the parking garage. ...

or rent a car for about $28 per day.

Rental cars are pretty cheap in Las Vegas and valet parking is FREE (+ tips), self parking is free ..... This is a pretty easy choice if you can afford the car, you can then go out for dinner somewhere decent as well.

No wonder he was out of breath. His yelling was wasting too much breath cuz I doubt the pickpocket was going to stop cuz he said so. /images/graemlins/grin.gif

haha...it was actually a little surreal. we were on the strip, and we saw this guy sprinting by and thought nothing of it. A few seconds later we see this guy running much slower yelling for someone to stop the guy (except he was so far behind...I doubt anyone up near the pickpocketer could even hear it).

I for one am more than happy to give the cabbies a good tip. But when I get in the cab and they start yelling at me because they don't like where I want to go... Then F' them and I am not leaving a tip. The ones who are actually nice and do their job get a good tip from me.
