View Full Version : Eating during tournaments?

theordinaryboy

hey there

just wondered what people do about food when playing live tournaments.

Are there waiters/waitresses going round the tables asking if anyone wants drinks?

If so can you order food from these, is it ok to eat at the poker table?

Are soft drinks or anything else free?

When are the breaks for food/dinner?

I am only playing the main event so if it differs please respond in relation to that.

Cheers

People should never eat at the table IMO

Cocktail waitresses come around and you can order drinks. Basically free but you should obviously tip them. You get a 15 minute break every 2 hours, and a 1 hour dinner break each day, usually after the 6th level.

Exactly! Eat before you leave home and during breaks and keep your greasy paws off the cards.

I wish there was a rule about this, but I guess diabetics etc. would then have potential health issues.

The only applicable tournament rule I could find was #51, "There shall be no foreign objects on the table with the exception of one card cap."

Of course they are not enforcing this rule wrt drinks.

Regarding food, at my tables some players have been eating with the food in their laps and no dealers/floor people have objected.

I have no problem with having drinks at the table. But food should be kept away. Even diabetics should be able to think ahead enough to eat during the 15 minute breaks/dinner breaks. I think food just slows down the game, greases up the cards, and frankly is rude. But ban drinking at a card table and I might need to find a new hobby... /images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Ditto. There is nothing wrong with a cup of coffee, bottle of water, etc., at the table, but any kind of food is rude and infringes on others. Even small snacks tend to scatter crumbs on the table and gunk on the cards. And anything more than your chips and a drink tends to sprawl out into other peoples' space. Space at a table is limited enough as is.

And at the risk of being a complete grump on the subject, watching most people eat is disgusting. Do your private business in the bathroom and your eating in the restaurant.

Well, I like eating at the table. I've only really played cash games live, but I've logged probably 1000hrs doing so. The cards do NOT get greasy, and people are good about keeping crap off the felt. The only issue is that it does occasionally slow down the game when someone incapable of multitasking is chowing down, but then they're paying less attention to the game and are therefore playing worse...

In short, it's incredibly convenient and I've never seen it mess up the cards or the table at either Foxwoods (back in the day when you *could* eat at the table), the Bike, or Commerce. Perhaps people at other casinos are bigger slobs.

Sorry that this doesn't answer the original question about main event food at the table, but I figured I should toss in my apparently lone voice in favor of table-food.

Obviously you don't know any diabetics....but "a low" will not be quick fixed with food as easily as with glucose from tablets or any soda, juice, etc....to say they should "plan ahead" is simple ignorance of the disease.

Finger foods are disgusting.
Pizza...
Hot wings!!! Jeez...

Most are careful but some leave grease and sauce on the chips, cards and table.

And what about those who like tacos and popcorn??

The worst I've seen was at the slots.
A woman pumping quarters into the machine and doritos into her mouth with the same hand. I couldn't not stare.

It doesn't really bother me when people eat at the table when they are using utensils. It is so gross to watch people touch the cards and then put their hands all over a sandwich or french fries before eating it.

Worst we had was a guy with Cup o' Noodle soup, he even asked to eat at the table and the dealer said, you must do it off the table, so he did, until it was his turn to act and he spun around and hit the table with it. boom all over the table and since we was in 8, it got over 9 and the dealers chips, we spent 15 min cleaning it up.

Eat away from the table, be kind to everyone else.

There are signs outside the WSoP tourney room that says no food may enter. This wasn't enforced during the initial Events and i doubt it is now. Just don't do anything that slows down play or gets things greasy.

I ate some cheese cracker sandwiches during one of my Prelim Events without a problem. I waited to eat my Subway until dinner break. I was also able to forage for food from the Full Tilt and Ultimate Bet hospitality suites. However, that might not be feasible during the breaks in the Main Event. For that, i'd be happy just getting to the bathroom and back without missing any hands.

Ok I don't generally eat at the table, but what the hells wrong with someone who's hungry eating a sandwich if they don't want to wait an hour for the break, jesus I can't believe how bad everyones getting these days, theres no leniency at all anymore.

I agree hot food is a bit off, but a sandwich of a bag of crisps (chips) (a small bag mind not the america 1/2 lb bags /images/graemlins/smile.gif)

This is what I do. I order a coffee from service and a huge glass of ice. I tip. I give it to Glenn, or if he's not there I do it myself. I put the coffee over ice in my shaker bottle. I wait for it to get cold a few seconds and then put my meal replacement/protein powder on top. Screw on the lid and shake it up.

Yes, sometimes I have to do this every two hours to keep my sugar controlled (four hours max), but it keeps me healthy and alert at the tables.

I also eat light during dinner. No big buffet. Just a decent, light meal. No frills. Tons of water.

I have no problem with anyone having soda, juice, etc. at the table. It's food I don't like. And I've known several diabetics. I'm sure if my brother-in-law was at the main event playing poker and needed to fix "a low", he could fold a hand, and pull a candy bar out of his pocket/bag, and eat it and I would probably be ok with that. People chowing down on greasy burgers, fries, huge grilled chicken sandwhiches, chips, nachos, etc is just not needed, and is rude, imho.

Those aren't things you do in public anywhere. People eat in public all the time...are you annoyed when someone in a movie theater with you buys popcorn, or someone at a baseball game with you buys a hot dog? If a poker room has food available at the table, I don't see anything wrong with taking advantage of that, as long as you are aren't messy.

Keep in mind that right now they are saying there might not be a dinner break at all during Day 1 of the main event. That's included in the first item of the "General Rules" if you click on the structure on the WSOP website. So eating during play might be the only option. I think as long as people use common sense it's not an issue.

I purchased a sandwich at the Subway at the Orleans Casino in the morning and brought it with. It's a lot easier than trying to manage one of the restaurants at the Rio or trying to find somewhere outside the Rio within walking distance.

I wasn't hungry at dinnertime, since i had been mooching food from the Full Tilt hospitality suite. However, had i not eaten then i certainly would have been hungry before they let us leave for the night at 1:15 or so.

Obviously I can't say what the situation will be during the main event, but I did not experience any problems whatsoever getting food at the Rio during the tourneys last weekend. The poker kitchen is a minute away and had plenty to offer; and with any type of a dinner break you can take the 5 minute walk back to the casino and hit the chinese restaurant, which is pretty quick.

I prefer to pop open a big bag of Cheetos. Pretty soon there's a coating of that fine orange powder all over everything, and it's impossible to get off of cards, chips, felt, etc. That dust is toxic. It puts everyone on tilt, and you can really build a huge stack while people are going nuts trying to bust you.

PS Don't forget to share your food with the dealer.
