View Full Version : Harrah's has choosen YOU! (WSOP schedule)

Okay, so Harrah's has hired you to set up the schedule for the 2007 WSOP. There must be exactly 38 events to be played during the series, meaning 8 days will have two events scheduled at the same time.

Obviously we all heard the criticism toward Harrah's for the schedule. Too many NLHE events, killing stud hi/lo, not enough PLO events, scheduling LHE and OL8 events on the same day etc etc.

What will you change in the schedule? What kind of events will you add, what will you take out?

Here is a summary of the events this year :

9 regular NLHE events.
3 shorthanded NLHE events.
2 rebuy NLHE events.
1 shootout NLHE event.
1 ladies NLHE event.
1 casino emp. NLHE event.
1 seniors NLHE event.
4 PLHE events.
4 LHE events.
1 shooutout LHE.
(27 total holdem events)

3 Omaha Hi/Lo events.
2 Pot Limit Omaha events.
(5 total Omaha events)

2 Stud events.
1 Stud Hi/Lo event.
1 Razz event.
(4 total Stud events)

1 KC lowball event
1 HORSE event.
(2 total misc. events)

Why limit the experiment to these guidelines? Adding a few more events plus a few more days = more juice and filled hotel rooms for Harrah's.

No real reason, just that the options are endless, so lets try to do a schedule within the bounderies of the current WSOP.

here's the events anyway:
4 regular NLHE events. (buy-ins: $1000, $4000, $8000, and $20,000)
1 rebuy NLHE events. ($100 buy-in, unlimited re-buys for the first 2 days, and with each rebuy comes a beer, whether you want it or not)
1 shootout NLHE event.
1 ladies NLHE event. (i know a lot of ppl would cut this one, but i keep in until females regularly make up at least 35% - 40% of the field in each event)
1 casino emp. NLHE event.
1 seniors NLHE event.
2 PLHE events.
2 LHE events.
(13 total holdem events {i left in as much hold'em as i could})

6 Omaha Hi/Lo events. (plo8 is ready to eclipse nlhe soon enough anyway)
4 Pot Limit Omaha events.
(10 total Omaha events)

2 Stud events.
2 Stud Hi/Lo events.
1 Razz event.
1 5-card stud
1 americana event
1 soko event
(8 total Stud events)

2 KC lowball events
2 HORSE events. (a $30,000 and a $2000)
1 A-5 triple draw event.
1 telesina event
1 pineapple event
(7 total misc. events)

the main event will be the $30,000 horse event. however, espn has discovered that the masses of people don't really understand any form of poker, and therefore the final table will not include any poker at all, and the championship will be decided by flicking cards across the table to cut through fruits and vegetables. something everyone can understand and enjoy.

I think this list is pretty good.
Issues:
The Main Event will never be not NLH. With HORSE events, the Main Event will not be such a huge thing, but I still think it deserves to stay.
I don't think there needs to be all of the 5-Card Stud varients. I had to look most of them up.
Maybe drop Pineapple event for another Stud event.

Any link to show how many people signed up for which events?

If I'm Harrah's, this is what I really care about above all else.

I'd add a 2-7 Triple Draw and a 5 card draw high for $2k each.

Maybe something wacky like Royal Holdem cause TV would love it.

Okay, here’s what I have.

As I see it there are two populations at work here, the professionals who want high buyins and a variety of games, and the amateurs who want lower buyins and mostly no limit holdem. I tried to please both by having two tracks of tournaments.

First, I scheduled the Pro track with the assumption that each event would go three days save the HORSE event which would go four.

The pro track consists of the $50,000 HORSE, $10,000 NLHE and PLO, $5,000 NLHE, PLO, LHE, PLO8, Stud, Stud 8, Razz, 2-7 Lowball. These are scheduled with no overlap so a pro could play in all of them, make the final table in all of them, and not miss a hand in any of them. This is 31 days not including the Main Event.

The Amateur track consists of $1,000 events in all of the same categories as the pro track, starting on the second day of the Pro event. The idea is that people who came to railbird the pros would then be able to play the same game the next day. Oh, and these events start with double stacks so the pros have room to operate.

Beyond that, fill in with $1,000 and $2,000 NLHE and LHE with both rebuy and shorthanded variants with NLHE making up about 80% of the events and full table events making up about 80% of events—not the same 80%.

Then you start the Main Event and take as much time as you need.

You have as many Stud and Omaha (each) events as NLHE.

As much as I don't want to see the WSOP devolve into the WSONLHE, the fan interest is there to support far more NLHE than any two other types of poker combined.

I'm not in the mood to go balls to the wall and actually slot these day to day, but here's what I roughly came up with and also (roughly) posted on DN's board:

NLHE - 1500, 2000, 2500, 3000, 5000, 1000 (w/rebuys), 1500 (shootout), 1500 (6-handed), 2500 (6-handed), 5000 (6-handed), 10000 (Main Event)
PLHE - 1500, 2000, 2500, 5000
LHE - 1500, 1500 (shootout), 2000, 2500, 5000
Stud - 1500, 2500, 5000
Stud/8 - 1500, 2500, 5000
PLO - 1500, 2000 (w/rebuys), 2500, 5000 (w/rebuys), 10000
Omaha/8 - 1500, 2500, 5000
Razz - 1500, 5000 (???)
2-7 TD - 1500
2-7 Draw NL - 5000 (w/rebuys)
Badugi (???) - 1500 or 2500
HORSE - 2500, 50000
Closed Events, all 1000 NLHE - Casino Employees', Ladies', Seniors'
$1500 NLHE (non-bracelet) - Every day during the Main Event from the day after the end of Day 2, to the day they play down to 27.

- First off, no multiple tourneys at the same game/amount for bracelets. The *3* 1500 NLHE tournies on this year's schedule is a bit much. I can see the case for it, but I'm going for making the bracelets mean something, i.e. "The $1500 NLHE Champion of 2007".

- Second, I drew the baseline at entry fees at 1500, with the closed events at 1000, with the exception of the 1000 NLHE rebuys, and made sure (almost) every game had a 5k or 10k "Championship" tournament.

- A case can be made for adding a 1500 6-handed as well to appease Harrah's (another NLHE tourney since my sched kills the multiple 1500s for bracelets they have now) and players with short-handed lovelust.

- The 2000 PLO w/ rebuys is up in the air... I put it like this to allow PLO GAMBOOOOOOOL at a "relatively low cost". Can make a case for having a 2500 freezeout instead. Or, actually, have both and make it 5 PLO tournaments, as I do feel PLO is the game that's overdue for the "big push", plus I make the Euros happy.

- 5000 Razz is optional. Honestly, I see 5000 2-7 TD working better.

- The 1500s during the ME are already on the schedule, but I stop it at what's now the "60 to 27" day so the last two days and 3 tables of the Main Event can get the 100% attention of Harrah's that they deserve.

In all, 11 NLHE, 4 PLHE, 5 LHE, 3 Stud, 3 Stud/8, 5 PLO, 3 Omaha/8, 1 (or 2) Razz, 1 (or 2) 2-7 TD, 1 2-7 Draw NL, 1 Badugi, 2 HORSE, 3 Closed Events.

20 open HE (serving Harrah's), >20 open non-HE (serving the need for variation), and the 3 Closed Events... my final schedule comes out to 43-45 events.

My basic philosophy is there should be most games represented. The most popular games should have the most levels of play. You shouldn't have multiple events of the same structure and buy-ins. Other than $50K horse, nothing should be as much to enter as the Main Event. Therefore for most games there should be an $1500 intro/beginner/cheaper flight and a $5000 pro flight. The more popular games/formats get more events in between.

Full ring NLHE (10 max, not 11):
$1000, T1500

Funny, I was thinking about this just the other day.

Main Event ($10,000 NHLE)

$1000 Ladies, $1000 Seniors, $500 Casino Employees

NLHE (7): $1000/r, $1500, $1500/r, $2000, $2500, $3000, $5000
PLHE (4): $1500, $2000, $2500, $5000
LHE (4): $1500, $2000, $3000, $5000
6/max NLHE (2): $2500, $5000
$2000 NLHE Shootout
$2000 LHE Shootout

Stud (3): $1500, $2500, $5000
Stud Hi-Lo (2): $1500, $3000

PLO (4): $1500/r, $2000/r, $5000/r, $10,000
Omaha Hi-Lo (2): $1500, $2500

Razz: $1500

H.O.R.S.E.: $25,000

That may only be 37, actually. You could add either a lower buy-in HORSE event (~$5000) or 2-7 draw or triple draw. You could also make the $1500 PLO event another Omaha 8 event.

The only changes I'd make would be two 2-7 TD events, one PL, one limit, both replacing 1k/1.5k/2k NLHE events. Why do we really need NINE NLHE events anyway?

Anything $1000 should be a rebuy, and there should be very few.

In general the buy-ins should be raised i.e. more $3000 to $5000 and less $1500.

A heads up tournament would be nice, it could have a large buy in like the Mirage 15k so Harrahs wouldn't feel bad about having to use all those dealers.

It seems a lot of people are desperate to have Stud re-represented out of some sense of "poker purity" or karmic poker justice. The fact is that most people do not play it now, and most people also just don't like stud that much. Maybe four events is just about right (although the buyins should be higher)

PLO/8 would have to be a $5K rebuy event or it would be over in forty minutes.

I'm way too much of a geek for this. After reading replies, and taking things into consideration (some thoughts down below), this is my final revamped WSOP schedule:

NLHE - 1500, 2000, 2500, 3000, 5000, 1000 (w/rebuys), 1500 (shootout), 1500 (6-handed), 2500 (6-handed), 5000 (6-handed), 10000 (Main Event)
PLHE - 1500, 2000, 2500, 5000
LHE - 1500, 1500 (shootout), 1500 (6-handed), 2000, 2500, 5000
Stud - 1500, 2500, 5000
Stud/8 - 1500, 2500, 5000
PLO - 1000 (w/rebuys), 1500, 2500, 5000 (w/rebuys), 10000
Omaha/8 - 1500, 2500, 5000
Razz - 1500
2-7 TD - 1500, 5000
2-7 Draw NL - 5000 (w/rebuys)
Badugi - 1500
HORSE - 2500, 50000
Closed Events, all 1000 NLHE - Casino Employees', Ladies', Seniors'
$1500 NLHE (non-bracelet) - Every day during the Main Event from the day after the end of Day 2, to the day they play down to 27.

- Since this is theorertically for 2007, the 1500 LHE 6-handed and 1500 Badugi are "trial runs" to see how the events would do as far as # of entrants go live. 2-7 TD has enough of a following in live action and on the 'Net that really, its lack of presence is mind-numbing, and an entry-level 1500 and "Championship" 5000 is overdue.

- In a similar vein, games such as 5-card Stud, 5-card draw, A-5, PLO/8... they won't get anything near enough people to justify putting them on the schedule. The 5k 2-7 NL w/rebuys is already there for the pros and something to place at the end of the schedule (like it is now) to get a "breather" before the Main Event (since this tourney usually only gets ~70 people). Harrah's already eats that, they wouldn't want another sub-100 person event on the schedule.

- There's Razz in the HORSE, so a 1500 for Razz alone is all that's really needed.

- On the flip side, PLO needs to get its long overdue push, going up to 5 events with a mix of rebuys (@ 1000 and 5000), "entry-level" (1500 and 2500), and of course, holding onto the 10k Championship. With this I'm looking to ESPN to put at least 2 of these tournies on TV and to pimp PLO as the "hot-new action game" to the masses. If things shake and move like I'd want, there's potential to add another 1-2 PLO events for 2008.

- Still a ton of Hold'Em, yeah, as the subject says, Harrah's has chosen me. But this schedule comes with no duplicate events (like this year w/ 3 $1500 NLHE), and the split between HE and every other game comes down 50/50, which'll make players happy.

- As far as scheduling goes, I love TT's idea of getting a separate room for live action, so that it can go 24/7 at the Rio instead of needing to be shut down when those extra 50 tables are needed for the tourney. I'd kick things off on Friday, opening up the cash game room, and the Amazon Room for satellites. This works for the cash game players, but also works for Harrah's, letting them work out the kinks in this first weekend that they will find in their staff (i.e syphon out the weak dealers, etc.), and determine who needs to go where, and who can deal what. The first tourney would kick off the following Monday, with the $1k ($500 is for sissies) Casino Employees' Event.

- As far as piggy-backing 2 events to start on the same day, all I'd go with as of right now is combining the Ladies' and Seniors' starts as the same day as the 10k PLO and 50k HORSE, which Harrah's actually did this year. I'd kill all other piggy-backing for the most part, meaning I'd be adding another week or so to the schedule, which isn't the worst. Adding another week = another week of crazy action in Vegas + more juice for Harrah's + more hotel rooms rented.

In all, 11 NLHE, 4 PLHE, 6 LHE (21 HE Total), 3 Stud, 3 Stud/8, 5 PLO, 3 Omaha/8, 1 Razz, 2 2-7 TD, 1 2-7 NL, 1 Badugi, 2 HORSE (21 non-HE Total), and 3 Closed Events.

45 Bracelets.

While I love TD, is this really true that it has a huge following. I rarely see even 2 full tables at UB. My last trip to Bike and Commerce saw exactly 0 TD tables. I would add only one TD event.

I think there'd be enough.

Triple Draw shows up in pretty much every mixed game now (its in the 60/120 mix running at the B right now, for example).

People that don't have the roll to bury 25k into the 2-7 NL rebuy event that's on the sched now would love the 1500 TD alternative, and similarly deeper rolls would love the 5000 TD.
