I saw a TV ad last night (I couldn't find a link to it anywhere online, I'll post if I can find it), where Casey Cagle, candidate for GA Lt. Govenor was slamming his opponent Ralph Reed over Reed's "supposed" stance on internet gambling. The TV ad was pure mudslinging. They even dealt out a poker card with Reed's face on it then another one that read "supports online gambling". This link from Cagle's website sums it up.

I love that this guy can't find better issues with which to attack his candidate. He had another ad that slammed Reed for lobbying for Enron. I'm sure Reed lobbied on behalf of an energy company before the Enron fraud. But just like all politicians, Cagle seems to be twisting the truth and appealing to most voters base emotions (if Reed lobbied for evil Enron, then he must be evil)

Isn't Ralph Reed one of the guys that founded the Christian Coalition?

I don't believe he "founded" the Christian Coalition, but he was in charge of it for a significant period of time. He is bright, articulate, and also very conservative. I wonder if this truly is the same guy?

I did some research, and it is the very same Ralph Reed. Despite what his opponent says, his is not a friend of online or B & M Casinos. I got this paragraph of an aricle posted by him on his campaign website

"I have always opposed gambling on moral grounds. As executive director of the Christian Coalition in the 1990s, I helped create the National Gambling Impact Study Commission, which recommended a nationwide two-year moratorium on casino gambling expansion."

At first I thought Reed was being attacked on the gambling issue by a Democrat general election opponent, but it seems that this is instead a Republican PRIMARY opponent. I guess they are using opposition to gambling as one of the focus points in their campaign for Lt. Governor.

This probably stems from Reed's involvement in the Abramoff scandal. Through Abramoff, Reed received a few million dollars from Indian casinos in return for him organizing against the expansion of casino gambling (which would obviously benefit existing casinos.) I don't understand the connection to internet gambling, other than the indirect one that eLottery was a client of Abramoff's, and that some blame Abramoff for the defeat of earlier online gamling prohibition efforts.

It is time for Nevadans who support online poker to seek a commitment from Nevada's favorite candidate for Lt. Governor, Bob Stupak, to support online poker ....

Take that, Ga.

Basically it's a pissing contest: "You think HE'S conservative? I'm WAY more conservative than he is!"

The irony is that the opponent is unwittingly demonstrating that HE is not a true conservative. (Not that Reed is either, mind you.)

There are more than two parties. Both the Democrats and Republicans are full of chit, and entirely money driven IMO.

If there was a third party whose candidates weren't usually nutso, I'd be there.

Does this mean you're voting for Cathy Cox for governor? Are you out of your [censored] mind?

OMG, so true. I would love to vote libertarian if they could ever learn to button up their image and not come across as such nuts.

I may be. I haven't voted dem in over ten years. But, just like all elections, this one is going to come down to the lesser of two (or three) evils for me. Vote for one of the "no, I'm more conservative!" guys or a dem. This is hard.

I must say, though. Cathy Cox did make it so that I could renew my CPA lisence online (when she was secretary of state). Always saves me a little work.

Ralph Reed was the executive director of the Christian Coalition for much of the 90s. He is generally credited with taking them from a basicly unorganized grassroots movement to the highly influential voting block they are today. His involvement with the Abramoff scandal was this:
When one Indian Casino client of Abramoff didn't want another to open a casino in their territory, Jack payed Ralph to whip up the Christians in protest. He has repeatedly denied that he knew who was paying for his services. Most of the emails between the two tell a different story.

Ralph Reed is the worst kind of hypocritical slime. I don't know anything about his opponent but I had do deal with Ralph Reed when I worked on a Senatorial election in Alabama. FWIW, I would't piss on him if he was on fire

Have you noticed how nearly every single ad is nothing but mudslinging from every candidate this year. I've heard practically nothing of the issues. I'm sick of it already. Think of how it will be when the primaries against people in thier own parties are over and they starting running against the opposing party.
