Seriously, that is pretty crazy. Were there not many players to begin with?

133 tables, ~700 signed up.

Cardplayer doesn't always list unknown players in their unofficial chip counts do they, they are mainly tracking the pros.

This tournament is more $ for one but more importantly is going to be dominated by experienced players, the edge greatly swings away from the amature so unknowns without 6max experience are going to avoid this tourney.

This should be a tournament that cash game specialists could dominate. Maybe a lot of unkown 6 max cash game players are up their in chips but unknown to cardplayer to officially list.

There is another one coming up in July. Probably more popular with your aveage Joe due to its proximity to the ME and other events that run later on in the series. Also, 2.5k might be too much since many know they are -EV 6-handed against that field anyway...

Cardplayer generally lists only known pros and the chip leaders during their first day of coverage. So the pros listed in spots 5-10, for instance, may actually only be in the top fifty.

Although it does seem like the top pros have been doing very well in the first day-and-a-half of the first few WSOP events this year, before fading for some reason during the evening of day 2.

maybe 5 years from now, theyll have some advanced tracking system that will give you live standings for every single player in the field.

Wouldn't be too hard. Computer chips inside of the poker chips, with little pads under each players stack to read them. Similar chips exist to track the progress of runners in large field cross country races.

Also, computer chips inside of the poker chips would also go a long way to prevent counterfitting.

Wynn already has this. Extending this technology to track chip counts is definately possible right now. Whether harrah's wants to incur the expense of hundreds of thousands of rfid chips and tables to read them is a completely different question.

Low tech solution:
Each table has a "lineup" card. When a player sits down, his/her id number entered. Keep card in holder on back of dealer chair.

Runner comes by, scans the table for "big stacks", relays/notes stack size and player ID.

Should get the top 30% or so fairly easily. Do you really expect them to post chip standings for 2000 early in the day of an event?

there simply are not that many people looking for updates. sure, two plus two-ers and other random poker fanatics want to know, but that's not nearly a big enough group to justify the cost.

Actually having to play post flop poker really hurts a lot of donakment regulars.

giving players name-tags or lasting player ID numbers so that the updaters have some idea of some of the unknowns would be a start.

It's kind of hard for them to post updates about "that guy in seat 4 who just won a few chips who nobody has ever seen before."

This already exists from chip manufacturer Bud Jones The Wynn has it installed, but only tracks black action or better at this stage. Its not totally ready for prime time, but they are using it in some casinos in the pits to track every bet.

You should have seen the final table for this event last year, it was pretty stacked and fun to watch

One of the CardPlayer guys followed me (an unknown). Each one has a certain number of tables they cover. They don't follow all the players at each table, however.

Basically they ask you your name and how many chips you have. During day 1 and 2 you just give them a rough count. They write the info down in their notebooks and also call it in on their lapel microphones to the website guy in the back of the room.

It was cool to have a guy come up periodically and ask "How many chips Paul?".

Considering they don't even want to invest in new decks for a $50k buyin tournament, I'm guessing they won't want to incur that expense.
