After a flop of KJ9 Phil Ivey and John Phan put all their chips in the middle. Ivey has K,Q but is behind as Phan turns over pocket aces. The J on the turn gives each player two pair but reduces Ivey's outs to the two remaining kings. The 8 on the river seals his fate. John Phan is sitting at $2,300.

Does this mean a 10 for a straight (4 more outs) is no good?

Maybe everyone is colluding in a super-double-secret Kill-Phil strategy. Everyone in the whole tournament goes all-in every hand til a winner is declared.

I can't track it from work, but if anyone sees the name Jon Byars ever, can you post how he's doing? He's ArtVandeley on the forums.

A few hands later, Hellmuth from mid-position raises to $450. The big blind reraises all-in to $1,200 to go. Hellmuth makes the call, flipping over A/images/graemlins/club.gifK/images/graemlins/spade.gif. His opponent has 10/images/graemlins/diamond.gif9/images/graemlins/club.gif. The 7/images/graemlins/heart.gif7/images/graemlins/club.gif6/images/graemlins/heart.gif is friendly for Hellmuth, but the turn and river brings two nine's (9/images/graemlins/heart.gif9/images/graemlins/diamond.gif) to his opponent leaving Hellmuth with $10,500.

I went over to the Rio for a while. It's a bit of a madhouse in the tournament hall.

Cash games had long waiting lists, presumably due to the large # of dealers being used for the tournament. I was dissapointed to see the Rio not using a computer system for their cash game waiting lists. Instead, they've got a big dry erase board with player initials on it.

The shops and setups outside the tournament hall are still incomplete. The "Poker Kitchen" was pathetic. Players expecting a good buffet setup to fix the dining problems of last year will be very dissapointed. The Poker Kitchen was nothing but a tent set up outside offering $6 hamburgs and $4 hot dogs (plus pizza an salads).

I really think there's a need for a revolution in poker updates. Why isn't anyone offering a game cast type updates yet? That will fix the AWFUL writing skills in most of these updates as well. Either get qualified writers or some sort of visual technology.

[/ QUOTE ]

There are 200 tables to cover? Are they going to pick just one for the gamecast?

On the final tables, it could be possible. In fact, there seems to be a nice media setup near the final table stage. We might be getting better online coverage this year.

Yuv
06-27-2006, 08:51 PM
ESPN can offer 10 gamecast for every NBA game running that day (and I assume other sports as well, that I don't follow). Obviously you can't cover 200 tables, but picking 10 is very much possible. But ya, I was mostly refering to final tables and final stages of tournaments, after seeing the awful updates from the TOC last night.

Hopefully you are right about this year.

HSB
06-27-2006, 09:04 PM
I would think that if they had RFID chips that a gamecast thing for 200 tables would be doable. It wouldn't show you the cards necessarily but you'd get chip updates in a hurry, and you could have someone monitoring hole card cams and overhead cams to fill in the cards on big hands.

"Tue Jun 27 17:01:00 PDT 2006

Gracz And Strasser Take A Hit

Michael Gracz makes a small raise, Jason Strasser reraises making it $2,600 to go. Fred Yazbek on the short stack calls all-in. After thinking for around two minutes, Gracz reraises all-in. Strasser folds and Gracz flips over Aclub6club. Yazbek shows KspadeQspade. Though the board has two 6's, Yazbek rivers a fifth spade. Though Gracz loses the main pot he did get some of his chips back on the side pot with Strasser."

"Tue Jun 27 17:49:00 PDT 2006

Gracz Eliminated

Michael Gracz moves all-in preflop with his short stack. He is called by Jason Strasser. Gracz reveals an A-7 off-suit, and Strasser flips over 9-9. With no help from the board, Gracz is eliminated."

I read that somebody is working on the RFID thing. Maybe we'll have it in place next year or the year after. That would be cool - having real-time chip counts available on a web page.

RFID tracking could also be used to make sure that chips don't wonder off the tournament floor or exchange hands except across the table.

No kidding it was harmless. Her opponent was drawing dead. Set of 10's on the turn against a pair of Q's, yeah...I'd say so.

You are the nittiest nit of all.

[/ QUOTE ]

I love to jump on a nit when I can, but I'm missing something here. Harmon has a set of tens. What can her opponent catch on the river to pull ahead of her? If a Q falls on the river, her opponent has 3 Qs and she has a full boat.

Crosspost from the unofficial thread: Here's the list of players broken down by table for today, if anyone wants to see where their horse is sitting. FWIW, I think everyone on table 147 got screwed, and Krux and Darden got a sweet draw, as did Mortensen. Raymer got hosed as well, being in almost the top 25% in stacks going into the day, but he's 5th on his table. At least the big stacks at his table are to his right, mostly.

Chad Burum Eliminates Carl Olson
Both players check a flop of K55, then Burum pushes on the 9 turn. Olson makes the call with AK, and Burum has him covered. Burum has only three outs for a gutshot straight with the 68, but hits the miracle 7 on the river, sending Olson home in 85th place.

edit: BTW -- wtf?

The Fossilman Eliminated in 63rd Place
Brandon Cantu raises in middle position to $10,000 and Raymer calls in the big blind. Raymer pushes all-in on the flop of 6diamond4diamond4club for $13,900. Cantu calls with Kdiamond3heart, but Raymer is in the lead with A-5. But the board comes crashing down on Raymer with running diamonds to give Cantu the flush. The Fossilman is eliminated in 63rd place.

Cardplayer's coverage of this is atrocious. 20 minutes ago they had Adam Smith at ZERO chips and the last update they show him gaining 70,000 chips for a new total of ....70,000 chips. No mention of Paul though.

Its beyond embarrassing how bad their coverage has been.

I know it's kind of tough to observe and take notes and get it up on the blog. Kind of hectic and chaotic in there.
And the players aren't exactly wearing name-tags (unless that has changed).

But I agree that it seems like they would have to actually TRY to do a worse job.

Nobody ever asked my name until right after we got back from dinner with 22 left. I was totally anonymous the entire tournament. Part of treading water and never really getting involved in anything dramatic, I guess. I could care less, obv, but my family and friends were pretty freaked out that they couldn't find out at any point how I was doing.

Obviously, it's not easy to cover a billion tables, but they really should be able to do a better job as the table count gets lower. They have a fleet of staff members here, and the ones sweating the tables aren't the ones posting on the site - they communicate "back to base" with radios.

But, like I said before, at least I know who I'll be able to play with at FullTiltPoker.net. I was worried I wouldn't ever find out.

Yes, I think a lot of non-poker types think it is easy to keep up with every individual's chip-count.

Lots of people asked where they could get updates of how their friend was doing in the main-event.
Ummmm, nowhere dude. There are 6k or more players total. Nobody is wearing name-tags.
If you are one of the anonymous masses (meaning that your name isn't Chan or Raymer or something) then nobody will even know when you bust-out unless you make the money or do something spectacular.

I set things up with a friend of mine.
I called him with my updates when I could (every 45 mins or so) and he posted on my blog what I said.

You have to step away from the table to make a cell call so you have to do it quickly if it's not during a break or else you'll miss a hand. But it obviously works better than trying to lug a computer down there and type it up yourself.

Also better than the 'chain/rumor-mill' type process of just having a few friends who happen to know your AIM contact your girlfriend who is on your account who then gives the update of whatever latest info she has.

Doing it my way (via telephone to a guy ipdating your blog) there's also the danger that an ESPN camera will be pointed at you when you say that "Johnny Chan is at my table" and they'll make you look like an idiot on national TV.

However, my family and friends really enjoyed getting to check my blog throughout the day to see how I was doing.

Kind of inconvenient to always step away and make those calls. But my parents were really digging it.

Bob,

This year the rule is no cell phone calls within the ropes. It was being sporadically enforced.

Also, Cardplayer has little excuse for not having one of the runts find out who Paul is when there were only 3 tables left. Just as they have little excuse for screwing up the action so often in their reports. Its not as though its the local news trying to recount what happened, its a poker site reporting on poker.

Under the gun, Ron Stanley pushes all-in $130,000 with AJ. From the small blind Tom Nguyen calls all-in with 99. The flop comes AAQ giving Stanley three aces, and leaves Nguyen praying for runner-runner neeners. Once the turn shows the 2, Nguyen's night is over and Ron Stanley doubles up.

Tom Nguyen exits in 10th place and collects $56,081.

I asked this last year and I will again this year ... why does everyone get so bent out of shape about their coverage?

1. It is free ... you aren't paying for it.

2. While one would think they would get the last few tables, prior to that, how many dozens of runners would they need to check all the tables.

3. If anyone thinks that they can do it better, have at it. I think you will find that what they are trying to do for no direct income is pretty tough stuff.

Although I would do a pay-for-view of some type, until that happens, I am just glad that between 2+2 and CardPlayer I can keep up with what is going on. Actually it sucks because my work productivity seems to take a dive.

Good points.

OTOH, one would think "understand the rank of hands in Texas Hold' Em" would be a basic qualification for the live update writer, at the premier poker magazine, when they are covering the premier poker event of the year.

I played with her at two separate tables. She played passive and tight. She was on my left for quite awhile before I went out. One time, it folded to me and I limped in the SB with 76o because I wasn't about to raise Jen Harmon and we checked it down to the river where a Q came so I figured I stab with a smallish bet and she folded. Given how substantial the blinds/antes were and the fact she had me covered, I was pretty surprised she put up no fight whatsoever.

I am saying that for the quality of production that you expect, they are very likely understaffed, and have a lack of talent to pull it off.

To hire more staff (which would be required to cover more tables, and get summaries posted more quickly) of better quality (which would be required for no "neeeners" and better writing) would require that they spend a lot of money.

How much are you willing to pay for that? How much more will that increase their advertising or subscription base, which as far as I can tell is their only revenue from this coverage?

I am guessing they are already losing money, or breaking even at best, to provide coverage that we didn't have a couple years ago. To me, it is the whole gift horse mouth thing. Glad to have what I can get, even it means every now and again I have to say ... "that ain't right ... Raymer would have made a straight."

You are so right. I did some tourney coverage back in 2004, and it was TOUGH. No one has any idea until they have to do it, 12-18 hours per day, almost no pay, no food, no drinks, bright lights shining down on their heads, players who cover their stacks, hide their cards, give false names, etc.

And I won't even go into the nightmare that is "TV kicking you out so that they can get in..."

I had a discussion with Adam Friedman about this (and many other topics because the dude can't keep quiet).

Apparently there's a whole bunch of weak-tight play from the pros in these events because people just donate money to them when they do get a hand because they assume the pros are "making a move".

So there's basically no reason to take any chances.

Plus guys tend to assume chicks always chase. Even Jennifer Harmon.

Of course, she just could have been sitting on an awful hand in BvB, so that particular hand doesn't mean anything. But I'm not surprised by her play otherwise.

Seriously man, no big deal at all, although that is really a hand I would like to have back so I will blame my busting all on you. I can honestly say there were three hands I really regretted in this tournament that may have cost me a bracelet, but at least I learned from them quite a bit. I hope I get another chance someday, I won't misplay those situations again.

Look forward to taking you up on that beer, degen, and it was great meeting you.

Well, not so good for me in my first WSOP. I clearly need to spend more time here and elsewhere studying! I won exactly one pot (pocket Js, took the 25-25 blinds with a raise to 4x BB). I busted with pocket Ks the first hand after the first break on day 1. I was UTG+1 and went in with T425 and got called by the BB with AsJs. Flop was AA8 followed by 3 and Q. I estimate I finished in the top 2200. :-) At least I outlasted Robert Williamson who was at my table and the seating of 500 alternates.

I hope you're kidding, because while we could all spend more time studying, the results of your first tourney are meaningless. The decisions you made have meaning, though. Do you think you made any errors?

And I'm not in the camp that raises to 100 with 25/25 blinds especially with JJ. Raise to 75, get a bunch of donks to call you, and then spike a J and triple up.

I definitely made a number of poor decisions when I played, though I did make a few decent ones. My poor decisions tended to be calling when I should have folded (or raised) and getting too conservative (scared, really) post-flop when I was in a hand. I went out there to have the experience of the WSOP, and I did. Now, I have that much more experience and can go work on my game and get ready for next year (and all those other home tournaments and stuff, too!).
