Is this safe and doable during the day?

No, it's retarded.

<br>

Well let me rephrase. It's not close at all (a couple miles at least?) and it will be 105+ degree heat (some days 115+). Just take the free shuttle from the Orleans to the Goldcoast.

I know that its not too far. Are you saying that I'll get mugged?

edit. good idea about the shuttle

The route from Orleans to Rio passes through a district of fairly small and somewhat run-down commercial buildings.

I would say that it would be pretty safe in the daytime, and pretty risky after dark.

Even with the shuttle to the Gold Coast, it's still a hefty walk to the WSoP. So that you don't make the trek even longer, cut behind the Rio towards the Convention Center rather than enter from the front.

Here's a satellite map. (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=rio+suites,+las+vegas,+nv&ie=UTF8 &ll=36.117796,-115.189376&spn=0.007479,0.013282&t=h&om=1) The shuttle lets you off in front of the Gold Coast on Gold Coast Drive. From there, you'll want to head a close to a northeasterly path as possible, while taking advantage of what shade and air-conditioning possibilities there are.

Looping around to the front along W. Flamingo is much longer and entails a lot more time outside without shade.

IIRC, the last shuttle runs at 12:30 am. The first day, you should be able to catch it without a problem. I'm not sure about the end of the second day, but at if you have that problem, you'll have won enough money to afford a cab.

It's 2.6 miles in 110 degree heat. To me that's too far.

is it really only 2.6m? Regardless, fun walk with 4-10K in your pocket at midnight. Take a cab, boy-o.

something tells me that if he wants to do that walk he's not going to have between $4k-$10k in his pocket.

not necessarily so, iirc the shuttle drops off in front of the gold coast

cut through the casino and exit out the main lobby door (air conditioned)

walk through the Gold Coast parking garage (shade)

and then suffer for a few minutes on the way to the Rio

I can't imagine this would actually be a 2.6 mile walk?

Just looking on the map and looking at the '1 mile' scale.

Orleans to Palms looks to be maybe 3/4 mile.
Palms to Rio looks like maybe a 1/2 mile.

the only way I could see this being 2.6 miles is if you took Tropicana over to the strip, drove up LV Blvd to Flamingo, and then back west to the Rio.
Of course this would be an incredibly stupid way to go about this but sometimes those mapquest type things give really idiotic directions.

Orleans to the Tio seem do-able to me but would still be a pain of course. 30 minutes or more (at a quick pace) in 100-degree heat.

Taking the shuttle to the Gold Coast is a good option.

I'm sorry, I had it set on fastest time for driving directions, not shortest route. It is actually 1.9 miles. Still a nightmare.

Obviously the shuttle is your best bet(it goes to barbary coast as well). I walked this last year, in the daytime, in the heat. It's doable if you have to, probably 20 min. I stay at the orleans all the time and i've never felt unsafe walking around there even at 3am.

I stayed at the Orleans last year during the WSOP and took a taxi to the Rio for about $10. I wouldn't dream of trying to walk, even though you can see the Rio from the Orleans.

FWIW, in May I clocked it with a car odometer and got about 1.4 miles but this was from the closest points of each casino. I would imagine total walking from inside each casino will make it easily 2.0 miles. It "looks" like a safer walk than the one from the Bellagio/Cesaers area of the strip. During the day I wouldn't hesitate with the Orleans-Rio walk, but I'd probably jog it at night.

How is parking going to be over at the Rio? I'll be staying there in a few weeks and playing over at the Rio. I'm definitely renting a car (to also play some golf) so I'd have both options, but if parking is going to suck walking/taxi might be better?
