I'm planning on playing in the main event but looking to play 300/600+ sidegames. Would it be better to stay at the rio or the bellagio?

The big side games will likely stay at the Bellagio, with the exception of Sharam "Sheiky" Sheikhan's 400-800 triple draw lowball/Badugi mixed game at Caesar's.

(Sheiky allegedly got a lifetime ban from all MGM MIRAGE casinos for inappropriate behavior.)

Most players with any experience at all will stay away from the side games at the Rio, which are shark-infested.

If it's anything like last year, the good and bigger games will be at the Bellagio...

I'm staying at the Rio (it's nice to be able to get up 30 minutes before the tourneys start), but will be heading over to Bellagio for all side-action...

My mouth has been watering all year for the side action at the Rio.

Why the disparity between people who think the Rio side games are tough, and those that think they're juicy?

I'm thinking of heading to Vegas over the July 4 weekend, and hoping to find 15/30 and 20/40 games that are fishier than normal, not tougher than normal. Will I be ok at Bellagio and Wynn and Mirage per usual, or should I try out Rio? Are the wait times ridiculous this time of year?

It's the only time of year that PLO cash games run consistently in Vegas that I know of. I don't have much experience in middle limit HE, but I really can't imagine it being that scary. In my experience ANY tournament series makes the sidegames much much better. I wonder if the people who think the games are tough are used to very soft competition at their home games, and not the average Vegas game?

Just my take based on last year's experience...

The biggest limit hold'em game they had running consistently at the Rio was $25-50. The game was soft, and the players were generally playing over their heads.

The typical no-limit game (don't remember the stakes, but probably in the $1-2 range) was also pretty fishy, with lots of players who were trying out NLHE for the first time. There were a couple people who appeared to be feeding on all the fish in these games, but for the most part, they were pretty good.

As for the bigger NLHE games, they were pretty tough. Some very solid amateurs and some very well-known pros were in the big games, and I generally stayed away.

There were also some big mixed games (badougie, 2-7 triple draw, etc) that were for the most part filled with professionals taking money from one or two not-so-professionals.

So, it generally ran the gamut, but the smaller games were generally pretty good and the bigger games were generally pretty tough.

Again, just my take. Others may have had a different impression, and this year may certainly be different than last year. Personally, I'll be playing the side-action at Bellagio between events.
