View Full Version : Official Predict How Many People Enter WSOP ME Thread

The Colossus
06-22-2006, 12:52 AM
How many people do you think will enter the main event? Reply with a number, and if you think it will be enough for discussion, then explain why. I seriously have no idea how many people will enter, though I feel like it will be less than last year. Maybe twoplustwo can send a polo to the person who guesses the closest to the actual number.

Peace,

The numbers tripled from 2003 to 2004 (839 -> 2,576) and they doubled from 04 to 05 (5,691) so I expect an increase of about 50% --> 8,536 is my number

While this is by no means a reflection of how all the casual poker players felt, alot of players at least that i know said they wouldnt do it again because its much too long.

with that and the tv rating falling, i predict a similar number to last year if not slightly less.

so my unscientific hunch of a number is 5785.

Last year, pokerstars alone sent about 1,100 players to the ME. This year, with about 4 weeks of tournies left to go, they have already registered 1,024. I expect them to get to 1,400 to 1,500 alone.

This year, there will be 7,500 plyrs, only 500 short of the "cap".

If this is true and we add in all the other new or expanding sites qualifying players why wouldn't they reach the cap (assuming the cap is 8000)?

I'll predict "cap" of 8000.

John: OK, now I put you on the spot – What will be the number of participants in the main event this year?

Jeffrey: As many as want to signup. I'm the only person here who won't predict. I think it's a dangerous game. We're prepared for as many as want to sign up. All are welcome. If we see some growth from last year, I'll be happy. If we're flat from last year, I'll be happy.

http://www.cardplayer.com/poker_news/blog_entry/116

"It is all over the poker community and the Internet that Harrah's has capped the number of players for the 2006 Championship at 8,000. That is wrong! Admittedly, even Card Player reported it wrong.

I personally confirmed with Jeffery Pollack, WSOP Commisioner, that not only is it not capped at 8,000, but they already have accommodations for at least 9,000. Furthermore if demand dictates, they will try to expand even more."

FWIW, Barry Shulman is the author of this "rumor", which I suspect isn't a rumor since he claims to have spoken with Pollack himself.

Here's a comparison of the # of entrants from 2005 to 2006 for some other events:

Event/2006/2005
$1500 NLHE 2776 vs 2305
$5000 NLHE 622 vs 466
$2500 6-Max NLHE 824 vs 548

I think there will be over 7K in the ME, mainly because of the huge number of online qualifiers this year.

A year ago people were saying poker had hit its peak and that a downturn would certainly come this year. These three tournaments have increases from 20% to 50%.

I think we'll get the same claims that poker has peaked after this year's WSOP. But, I think they'll be proven wrong again in 2007.

I'm going with the already-stated point relating everyine saying 2005 would EASILY hit the cap of 6600, yet missed by ~17%. Supposed cap this year is 8000, so I'm thinking 20% less is about right, maybe 6500, as I feel poker has already reached a certain saturation point, and a few people will be dissuaded by the prospect of playing for 4 days or so and not cashing, and a remote few even annoyed at the childish rules like f-bomb penalties.

Either way, as long as it doesn;t go over 8000, a Mod here is 1k poorer. /images/graemlins/smile.gif
