I'm talking about the game, that I have most commonly seen after you win some credits in Video Poker. You get a chance to double your winnings, this is how it works.

For example, you win $5 in Video Poker. The computer then asks you if you want to double up (yes/no)? If you select yes, The dealer then deals 1 card face up, and 4 cards face down. You need to pick a card that is higher than the card that is up. If you do, you double your winnings, if not you lose what you would have won. You can keep doubling up multiple times.

Does anyone know what the house edge is in this game? It is pretty much blind luck so I don't think there is any strategy.

EDIT: If you don't know what I'm talking about, the Video poker games at the Crypto's have this feature.

there's no house edge. it just increases variance.

Yeah, it's an even money wager that just increases variance. It may have its benefits, however, if you play it in a casino and the money wagered goes towards getting points on your card. Then it might be worth it.

What happens if you tie? If a tie loses then there is a house advantage.

tie is a push

And by push you mean that you keep the money you originally won from the dealer, or he doesn't pay you on the original bet...

You can choose to double or collect same as before.

There's nothing especially wrong with there being a 0-vig sidebet, is there? I understood the "odds" bet in craps to have no house advantage.

I'm pretty sure that while the odds bets themselves have no house advantage, they cannot be placed without first making a pass/come out bet, and combined with this bet there is a house advantage. depending on how large the odds bet is allowed to be, i think the house edge is somewhere in the neighborhood of half a percent for the combined pass/come out bet and max odds bet. I guess this is an analagous situation where in order to make a double up bet with no house advantage you must first make a wager where there is a house edge.
