I know about "The Gambler" by Kenny Rogers.

Any others?

You're still the same by Bob Seger

Starts out: "You always won, everytime you placed a bet.."

"You always said, the cards would never do you wrong." "The trick you said, was never play the game too long."

Great song. A lot of the lyrics don't really make sense, but it's still a good song.

It reminds me of the 70's and 80's poker players who played underground and looked for juicy games to play, etc.

Seger rules.

This probably should be moved, maybe to NVG, but it's hear so I'll reply.

Wu-Tang Clan has a really good part in Back In The Game that compares their return to the rap scene to a poker game.

[GZA]
We were at the same table when the chips were checked
A gamblin +Rebel+ who +Inspects+ the +Deck+
Just when you thought we would fold our hand
Against all odds we raised the bet like we changed the plans
It was live on air but in between station breaks
I was holdin a pair and just made the table stakes
Split the demos, put insurance on tapes
A safeguard against the crusaders in capes
If I double down they say the Gods are sharks
If we win against the house they thought the cards was marked
We draw hit after hit from a royal flush menu
While the dealer promoted the full house venue
A spade in the club with the heart to wear diamonds
The high roller who got credit upon signin
They look puzzled when I shuffle, most of 'em stunned by the
hustle
Recourse of bluff game's your muscle

Steely Dan -- Do It Again...not sure if the card reference is poker or what.

Now you swear and kick and beg us
That you’re not a gamblin’ man
Then you find you’re back in vegas
With a handle in your hand
Your black cards can make you money
So you hide them when you’re able
In the land of milk and honey
You must put them on the table

An' a fresh deck in Mobile
Yeah some call me high handed
Some call me low handed

this thread comes up every 3 months and every time I post the same song

Mr Mudd and Mr Gold - by Townes Van Zandt

The wicked king of clubs awoke
it was to his queen he turned
his lips were laughing as they spoke
his eyes like bullets burned
the sun's upon a gambling day
his queen smiled low and blissfully
let's make some wretched fool to play
plain it was she did agree

He send his deuce down into diamond
his four to heart, and his trey to spade
three kings with their legions come
preparations soon where made
they voted club the days commander
gave him an army face and number
all but the outlaw jack of diamonds
and the aces in the sky

He give his sevens first instructions
spirit me a game of stud
stakes unscarred by limitation
'tween a man named Gold and man named Mudd
Club filled Gold with greedy vapors
'til his long, green eyes did glow
Mudd was left with the sighs and trembles
watching his hard earned money go

Flushes fell on Gold like water
tens they paired and paired again
but the aces only flew through heaven
and the diamond jack called no man friend
The diamond queen saw Mudd's ordeal
began to think of her long lost son
fell to her knees with a mother's mercy
prayed to the angels every one

The diamond queen, she prayed and prayed
and the diamond angel filled Mudd's hole
the wicked king of clubs himself
fell in face down in front of Gold
now three kings come to Clubs command
but the angels from the sky did ride
three kings up on the streets of Gold
three fireballs on the muddy side

The club queen heard her husband's call
but Lord that queen of diamond's joy
when the outlaw in the heavenly hall
turned out to be her wandering boy
Now Mudd he checked and Gold bet all
and Mudd he raised and Gold did call
and the smile just melted off his face
when Mudd turned over that diamond ace

Now here's what this story's told
if you feel like Mudd you'll end up Gold
if you feel like lost, you'll end up found
so amigo, lay them raises down

Yes, this should be elsewhere.

Yes, I'm a sad case..

Couple of less obvious ones -
Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts, Bob Dylan.
(they're playing 5 cards stud down by the stairs)
Boy called Sue- Johnny Cash
(His dad's in a bar, dealing stud)

but my favourite is "Smoke, Smoke, Smoke that Cigarette" by Tex Williams

.... nicotine slaves are all the same
at a pettin' party or a poker game
Everything gotta stop while they have a cigarette

In a game of chance the other night
Old dame fortune was good and right
The kings and queens they kept on comin' around

Aw, I was hittin' em good and bettin' 'em high
But my bluff didn't work on a certain guy
He kept callin' and layin' his money down

See, he'd raise me then I'd raise him
and I'd say to him buddy ya gotta sink or swim
Finally called me but didn't raise the bet!

--Hmmph! I said Aces Full Pal -- how bout you?
He said, "I'll show you in a minute or two
But right now, i just gotta have another cigarette."

CHORUS

Smoke, smoke, smoke that cigarette
Puff, puff, puff until you smoke yourself to death.

CHORUS
Tell St. Peter at the Golden Gate
That you hate to make him wait,
But you just gotta have another cigarette.

One of my favourites is Stranger Song by Leonard Cohen:

It's true that all the men you knew were dealers
who said they were through with dealing
Every time you gave them shelter
I know that kind of man
It's hard to hold the hand of anyone
who is reaching for the sky just to surrender,
who is reaching for the sky just to surrender.
And then sweeping up the jokers that he left behind
you find he did not leave you very much
not even laughter
Like any dealer he was watching for the card
that is so high and wild
he'll never need to deal another
He was just some Joseph looking for a manger
He was just some Joseph looking for a manger

And then leaning on your window sill
he'll say one day you caused his will
to weaken with your love and warmth and shelter
And then taking from his wallet
an old schedule of trains, he'll say
I told you when I came I was a stranger
I told you when I came I was a stranger.

But now another stranger seems
to want you to ignore his dreams
as though they were the burden of some other
O you've seen that man before
his golden arm dispatching cards
but now it's rusted from the elbows to the finger
And he wants to trade the game he plays for shelter
Yes he wants to trade the game he knows for shelter.

Ah you hate to see another tired man
lay down his hand
like he was giving up the holy game of poker
And while he talks his dreams to sleep
you notice there's a highway
that is curling up like smoke above his shoulder.
It is curling just like smoke above his shoulder.

You tell him to come in sit down
but something makes you turn around
The door is open you can't close your shelter
You try the handle of the road
It opens do not be afraid
It's you my love, you who are the stranger
It's you my love, you who are the stranger.

Well, I've been waiting, I was sure
we'd meet between the trains we're waiting for
I think it's time to board another
Please understand, I never had a secret chart
to get me to the heart of this
or any other matter
When he talks like this
you don't know what he's after
When he speaks like this,
you don't know what he's after.

Let's meet tomorrow if you choose
upon the shore, beneath the bridge
that they are building on some endless river
Then he leaves the platform
for the sleeping car that's warm
You realize, he's only advertising one more shelter
And it comes to you, he never was a stranger
And you say ok the bridge or someplace later.

And then sweeping up the jokers that he left behind ...

And leaning on your window sill ...

I told you when I came I was a stranger.

Most unlikely artist to write a poker song may well be Suzanne Vega with No Cheap Thrill (on Nine Objects of Desire).

Ante up. And don't be shy.
Who is that man who is catching my eye?
What's underneath all of the deadpan face?
Sitting so pretty with a criminal grace?

Lamebrain Pete wants to Spit in the Sea.
He's got a cool hand but it isn't for me.
Butcher Boy thinks he'll be splitting the pot.
But I've seen what he's got and it isn't a lot.

(When deuces are wild you can follow the queen.
I'd go too except I know where she's been.)

I'll see you, I'll call you, I'll raise you
But it's no cheap thrill
It will cost you, cost you, cost you
Anything you have to pay.

I limit the straddles, and you shuffle and deal.
When will the dealer reveal how he feels?
Is the lucky beginner just a five-card stud?
Is this winning streak going to be nipped in the bud?

I'll see you, I'll call you, I'll raise you
But it's no cheap thrill
It will cost you, cost you, cost you
Anything you have to pay.

I'll match you, I'll bet you, I'll play you,
But it's no cheap thrill
It will cost you, cost you, cost you
Anything you have to pay.

I could be here all day with Dead Songs that reference poker so I'll throw some the better or more well Known ones, these are all Greatful Dead , here's a line or 2 as well

Me and MY Uncle [You know my uncle, he starts a friendly game
Hi-lo jacks and the winner take the hand]

Deal [Since it cost a lot to win, and even more to loose...]

Ramble on Rose [Sitting plush with a royal flush, Aces back to back]

Dire Wolf [The wolf came in, I got my cards we sat down for a game..]

Loser [If I had a gun for Every Ace I've drawn, I could arm a town the size of Abliene]

Scarlet Begonias [She was to pat to open and to cool to bluff]

Stella Blue [When all the cards are down there's nothing left to see There's just the pavement left and broken dreams]

and of course

Truckin - [Somes times your cards aint worth a dime if you don't lay them down]

and edit before I get corrected Me and My Uncle was a cover of a John Phillips Song sung by Joni Mitchell prior to the dead

really good song. heres some poker parts:

if i had a gun for every ace ive drawn
i could arm a town the size of abilene

Dont you push me baby caucse i'm all alone
and you know i'm only in it for the gold
All that i am asking for is ten gold dollars
And i could pay you back with one good hand
.

.
Everybody prayin' and drinkin' that wine
I can tell the queen of diamonds by the way she shines
Come to daddy on the inside straight,
Well i got no chance of losin' this time.

Some of the variants of the Unfortunate Rake, eg, St. James Infirmary:

Oh, when I die, please bury me
In my ten dollar Stetson hat;
Put a twenty-dollar gold piece on my watch chain
So my friends'll know I died standin' pat.

Get six gamblers to carry my coffin
Six chorus girls to sing me a song
Put a twenty-piece jazz band on my tail gate
To raise Hell as we go along.

StaggerLee is a good gambling song as well, but they tend to be playing dice when he steals Billy Lyon's brand new Stetson hat, and not cards.

The card cheat by The Clash

There's a solitary man crying, "Hold me."
It's only because he's a-lonely
If the keeper of time runs slowly
He won't be alive for long!

If he only had time to tell of all of the things he planned
With a card up his sleeve, what would he achieve?
It means nothing!

To the opium den and the barroom gin
In the Belmont chair playing violins
The gambler's face cracks into a grin
As he lays down the king of spades

But the dealer just stares
There's something wrong here, he thinks
The gambler is seized and forced to his knees
And shot dead

He only wanted more time
Away from the darkest door
But his luck it gave in
As the dawn light crept in
And he lay on the floor

From the Hundred Year War to the Crimea
With a lance and a musket and a Roman spear
To all of the men who have stood with no fear
In the service of the King

Before you met your fate be sure you
Did not forsake your lover
May not be around anymore

this is the best song ever written about poker. It's on Bob Dylan the bootleg series 1-3.

Come around you rovin' gamblers and a story I will tell
About the greatest gambler, you all should know him well.
His name was Will O' Conley and he gambled all his life,
He had twenty-seven children, yet he never had a wife.
And it's ride, Willie, ride,
Roll, Willie, roll,
Wherever you are a-gamblin' now, nobody really knows.

He gambled in the White House and in the railroad yards,
Wherever there was people, there was Willie and his cards.
He had a reputation as the gamblin'est man around,
Wives would keep their husbands home when Willie came to town.
And it's ride, Willie, ride,
Roll, Willie, roll,
Wherever you are a-gamblin' now, nobody really knows.

Sailin' down the Mississippi to a town called New Orleans,
They're still talkin' about their card game on that Jackson River Queen.
"I've come to win some money," Gamblin' Willie says,
When the game finally ended up, the whole damn boat was his.
And it's ride, Willie, ride,
Roll, Willie, roll,
Wherever you are a-gamblin' now, nobody really knows.

Up in the Rocky Mountains in a town called Cripple Creek,
There was an all-night poker game, lasted about a week.
Nine hundred miners had laid their money down,
When Willie finally left the room, he owned the whole damn town.
And it's ride, Willie, ride,
Roll, Willie, roll,
Wherever you are a-gamblin' now, nobody really knows.

But Willie had a heart of gold and this I know is true,
He supported all his children, and all their mothers too.
He wore no rings or fancy things, like other gamblers wore,
He spread his money far and wide, to help the sick and the poor.
And it's ride, Willie, ride,
Roll, Willie, roll,
Wherever you are a-gamblin' now, nobody really knows.

When you played your cards with Willie, you never really knew
Whether he was bluffin' or whether he was true.
He won a fortune from a man who folded in his chair.
The man, he left a diamond flush, Willie didn't even have a pair.
And it's ride, Willie, ride,
Roll, Willie, roll,
Wherever you are a-gamblin' now, nobody really knows.

It was late one evenin' during a poker game,
A man lost all his money, he said Willie was to blame.
He shot poor Willie through the head, which was a tragic fate,
When Willie's cards fell on the floor, they were aces backed with eights.
And it's ride, Willie, ride,
Roll, Willie, roll,
Wherever you are a-gamblin' now, nobody really knows.

So all you rovin' gamblers, wherever you might be,
The moral of this story is very plain to see.
Make your money while you can, before you have to stop,
For when you pull that dead man's hand, your gamblin' days are up.
And it's ride, Willie, ride,
Roll, Willie, roll,
Wherever you are a-gamblin' now, nobody really knows.

Disagree. While I gave him some teasing abuse about that when I got my copy, the song grows on me more and more as I listen to it repeatedly. I think the winning-streak energy it represents is good.

Whether the piano riff belongs in the song is a moot point. However, a musical reminder about the Peanuts can never be a bad thing /images/graemlins/grin.gif

Morphine, Have a Lucky Day

I feel lucky I just feel that way
I'm on a bus to Atlantic City later on today
Now I'm sitting at a blackjack table and I swear to God my dealer has a
tag
says Mabel
Hit me hit me I smile at Mabel soon they're bringing complimentary
drinks to
the table
Players win and winners play have a lucky day (x2)
Mabel gives me a great big smile she's getting to know me she's on my =
side
I'm a winner (x4)
And I came to play now I know why they say
Players win and winners play have a lucky day (x2)
Have a lucky day
Now I'm down a little in fact I'm down a lot I'm on a roller coaster =
ride
that I can't stop
Yea my luck has changed but she'll come back
That's the beauty of a game of chance
I can't loose forever but I'm doomed to try because I keep on hearing a
voice inside
Players win and winners play have a lucky day (x2)

Oddly literal lyrics from this hardcore band, but...

"One for the Boys" by Bane:

I’m in the big blind
With an average stack and an aggressive image
The four seat limps right after me never a good sign
He’s been beating up the table showing down strong cards all night
The maniac in the nine throws in another raise he loves to raise
Confusing foolishness for courage and swinging on a vine
I peek at my cards (3 diamond, 2 diamond)
And decide I’m gonna defend the four seat does the same
And we all buckle in for our favorite ride
(flop: J club , 2spade , 8 heart)
I’m first to act and bet the pot hoping to win it right then and there
But the 4 seat calls and the maniac folds
And I’m out of position with a lowly pair of
two’s The dealer burns and turns
It is in this half second where life becomes perfect
The mind a weapon
Tomorrow's worries and yesterdays mistakes they crumble and fall away
For now I’m on the wire
(turn: 3 heart )
I check, the four bets
The trap snaps shut as I push my whole stack into the middle
He shakes his head to let me know
He doesn’t have those dreaded pocket 8s
And sighs, “I have to call”
(Seat four shows : K heart, J heart )
The river comes that sexy, sexy Ace of spades
And all is well in the world
Now you wanna take a good man down?
Send him back to his wallet to steam off another 500?
Well you just wink and show him threes up

Desperado...The Eagles
Draw the Queen of diamonds boy
She'll beat you if she's able
blah blah..I forget the rest...
I love "Do it Again" by Steely Dan also and the "Ace of Spades" by Motorhead.

Drive By Truckers

WHERE THE DEVIL DON'T STAY
My Daddy played poker on a stump in the woods back in his younger days
Prohibition was the talk, but the rich folks walked to the woods where my Daddy stayed
Jugs and jars from shiners, these old boys here, they ain't miners
They came from the twenty-niners
It didn't take a hole in the ground to put the bottom in their face

Back in the thirties when the dust bowl dried
And the woods in Alabama didn't see no light
My Daddy played poker by a hard wood fire
Squeezing all his luck from a hot copper wire
Scrap like a wildcat fights till the end
Trap a wildcat and take his skin
Deal from the bottom, put the ace in the hole
One hand on the jug but you never do know

Son come running
You better come quick
This rotgut moonshine is making me sick
Your Mama called the law and they're gonna take me away
Down so far even the Devil won't stay
Where I call to the Lord with all my soul
I can hear him rattling the chains on the door
He couldn't get in I could see he tried
Through the shadows of the cage around the forty watt light

Daddy tell me another story
Tell me about the lows and the highs
Tell me how to tell the difference between what they tell me is the truth or a lie
Tell me why the ones who have so much make the ones who don't go mad
With the same skin stretched over their white bones and the same jug in their hand

My Daddy played poker on a stump in the woods back when the world was gray
Before black and white went and chose up sides and gave a little bit of both their way
The only blood that's any cleaner is the blood that's blue or greener
Without either you just get meaner and the blood you gave gives you away
