Any recommendations for sites (not competing forums please) that you believe are intellectually stimulating, uplifting, etc. Not looking for stale or specific content but something with lots of material that makes you think, react, feel good (no porn please), etc., that won't bore you after a day or two.

One of my favourite is The Edge (http://www.edge.org/) . Well worth reading all of their archives! /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Enjoy

Oh, that's got to be this one:
http://freedomainradio.com/index_files/listen_in.htm

It's really, really challenging to your beliefs, and very, very educating concerning things that are completely wrong with the world, and through revealing the problems and solutions, it's totally a 'feel good' experience. It's also extremely uplifting for your social life; but you'll have to go through it to know why.

Does freedom radio have an actual AM station? If so I think I have come across it when working for an extremely liberal activist friend of mine. Talked about the whole 911 thing and then about ghosts and then a conspiracy involving the denver Air Force base personnel and aliens. Please tell me this isn't it.

That sounds like "Coast To Coast AM", a syndicated radio program that airs in the middle of the night, filled with goofy quackery and conspiracy theories about ghosts, aliens, alternate realities, bigfoot, angels, fairies, demons, mediums, psychics, and other assorted bull [censored]. It's really hillarious to listen to because the host and guests are incredibly credulous in their treatment of it all.

I listened to a couple of the pod casts on this site and thought it was very wishy washy. One was talking against the use of self-defence and it was so cringe-worthy. Havent listened to more than a couple though:P

No, he didn't say that. He was talking against the argument from people that pacifism doesn't work, in pointing out how non-violent their own lives are.

1-3 and 6-8 really form the basis of the series. I suggest starting with those before anything else, because you'll know where he's coming from, on a fundamental basis.

You may or may not be interested in this one because it's a Christian apologetic, but he is pretty intelligent, well-spoken, and argues from a logical standpoint. He's not a Jerry Falwell/Pat Roberston-type, though.

'4 Is Science a Virus
No. Not unless all computer programs are viruses. Good, useful programs spread because people evaluate them, recommend them and pass them on. Computer viruses spread solely because they embody the coded instructions: ``Spread me.'' Scientific ideas, like all memes, are subject to a kind of natural selection, and this might look superficially virus-like. But the selective forces that scrutinize scientific ideas are not arbitrary and capricious. They are exacting, well-honed rules, and they do not favor pointless self-serving behavior. They favor all the virtues laid out in textbooks of standard methodology: testability, evidential support, precision, quantifiability, consistency, intersubjectivity, repeatability, universality, progressiveness, independence of cultural milieu, and so on. Faith spreads despite a total lack of every single one of these virtues.'
