View Full Version : Position in lowball ("A need for information")

A while ago I asked a question about whether position mattered in perfect-information poker (specifically, 2-7 lowball). Original thread here:

Two interesting hands I found were:

1)

Player A has 2c 3c 4c 5s Ts
Player B has 2s 3s 4s 5c Tc
Player C has 2h 3h 4h 5d Td
dead cards: Qd

In this example the player who goes first has the positional advantage, because if he discards the other players must stand pat, giving him a narrow equity edge.

2)

A has Qc 8c 6s 4s 2s.
B has Qs 9c 7d 5h 3s.
dead cards: 5s and 5c

Here B prefers to do the opposite of whatever A does (break or stand pat), while A prefers to do the same action as B. If B goes first then A is a small favorite (about 1%). If A goes first then B and A are in a dead heat. So even in this perfect-information example there is a small positional advantage to going last.

While there cannot be any directly analogous situations in a flop or stud game, these toy examples suggest that calculating positional advantage for is anything but straightforward even with only one decision to make.
